Fourth year success at Pie Awards
We've won a ‘highly commended' for our overnight shin of beef at 2017's British Pie Awards.
A ‘highly commended’ award tops gold, silver and bronze awards. This year is the fourth time we've entered the national competition, winning awards each year.
We won the 'highly commended' for our shin of beef in the 'pub pie' category, one of the BPA's 21 classes.
As well as this year’s ‘highly commended’ award, we got four silvers; for our wild boar & chorizo, Cotswold venison and Devon duck in the ‘speciality meat & game’ class, and for our Breton chicken in the ‘chicken & other meat’ class. Marks for each pie are awarded out of 100 and to attain a gold, the pie has to score at least 90 marks. As in previous years, we attained an award for every one of our pies entered in the competition.
Over 900 pies were tasted by more than 100 judges and assessed for appearance, texture and flavour of both pastry and filling. The British Pie Awards are hosted by Melton Mowbray Pork Pie Association (MMPPA).
Our beef comes from Todenham Manor, situated three miles from Moreton in Marsh. The farm’s pasture land is grazed by Aberdeen Angus and South Devon cattle and the owners are dedicated to ethical farming practices.
Plenty! Pies director Marc Birch said,
“Having won awards each year that we’ve entered the competition, the pressure gets greater each time! Our shin of beef is particularly popular with our publicans as they tell us they’re pleased to offer their customers something more special than a beef & ale pie. We’re delighted that the judges gave it such high marks!”
In 2014, the first year that we entered the British Pie Awards, we won the top accolade of ‘champion’ pie for our Breton chicken pie, and in subsequent years we've won other ‘highly commendeds’, gold and silver awards.
Plenty! Pies are sold in a range of delicatessens, farm shops, garden centres, pubs and cafes, including the M5 services and Daylesford Organics, throughout Gloucestershire, the South West and West Midlands and at Stroud farmers’ market every Saturday and Cirencester farmers’ market once a month.
